A full size autonomous humanoid robot being designed for the DARPA Robotics Challenge (DRC). The DRC is a two year, multimillion dollar project aimed at developing the next generation of disaster response robots.
THOR, which stands for Tactical Hazardous Operations Robot, is being developed by researchers from Virginia Tech, University of Pennsylvania, Harris Corporation, and Robotis. Team THOR is one of seven Track A teams receiving $4 million over two years from DARPA.
The robot will be required to perform several very demanding tasks such as driving a vehicle, cutting it’s way through a wall, and climbing up ladders. Our robot was featured on the cover of the Feb. 2013 issue of Popular Science which includes an excellent article on the DRC Competition.
